Marriage is not a celebration of a ceremony and not all about exchange of rings or garlands. It’s all about a process of promising each other for leading a conjugal life. This is the institution whereby men and women are joined in a special kind of social and legal relationship for the purpose of founding and maintaining a family. In the Hindu rite of marriage, when the bridegroom holds the hand of the bride, he in a way promises his companionship on equal terms.
Examples of Swayamvara: There are many examples of swayamvara and the Ramayana records that the God Ram himself won Sita in a swayamvara.Even as late as the 7th century King Ramchand of Kanauji held a swayamvara for his daughter Sanyogita. This girl in reality loved the enemy of her father Prithviraj Chauhan. During the swayamvara the princess garlanded a statute of Prithviraj to the chagrin of all the contestants. Prithviraj who was hiding nearby now appeared and carried of the princess on his horse.

Mangalasuta(Mangalsutra) Dharana: Mangalya means that which gives good things and Dharanam means "wearing". This is one of the most important events of a hindu marriage.
