The strength Alorna is located in the town of Alorna which is about 30 km from Mapusa and 10 km east of NH 17 in Pernem Malpem. It was built by the Bhonsle of Sawantwadi in the 17th century.
The fort had four guns and in the year 1746, the fort was captured by the Marquis of Castello Novo (later known as Marquis de Alorna) of the Bhonsle. However, the possession was of short duration. In 1781, the fort was recaptured by Don Frederico Guilherme de Souza. It was used to defend against attacks from the north Maratha.
The fort is now in a dilapidated condition. However, it is a beautiful place to explore, as it stands on the banks of the Chapora river as it flows peacefully into Colvale.
